Guilty pleasures

Five Star

This week’s prompt from Sara over at Mum Turned Mom is ‘guilty pleasures’. I have to admit when I saw this I was excited! I love a bit of confession – maybe I should convert to Catholicism? On second thoughts maybe not – I wouldn’t know my genuflection from my affectation…

But what exactly is a ‘guilty pleasure’? It’s become synonymous with admitting that you love secretly listening to your Girls Aloud album (not me personally 🙂 ) or religiously watch TOWIE (another one I’ve never seen), but do you really feel guilty about admitting that? Or just a bit embarrassed by the naffness?
Goodness knows there’s plenty of naff stuff I love that I could admit to (the first gig I ever went to see was Five Star at the Hammersmith Apollo (if this is before your time – see YouTube) and I’d still rather listen to Five Star than Radiohead. 😛 I reserve the right to defend Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and I do love a MacDonalds Quarterpounder with Cheese.

Just last week though,Telegraph film critic Ann Billson utterly trashed the notion of a ‘guilty pleasure’ arguing why should a pleasure ever be guilty? And from the point of view of admitting to your love of all that’s naff that certainly holds!

But even the Oxford Dictionary definition of the term states that it is ‘something, such as a film, television programme, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard’.

So truly ‘guilty’? Well, I love a bit of a gossip. Chocolate éclair you say? Don’t mind if I do. Whiling away a couple of hours in Costa coffee surfing the blogosphere whilst sipping on my £2.15 latte? Heaven! Three hours of clothes shopping* for myself (without children obvs) and then a cream tea? My ideal afternoon.
Oh yes the list could go on and on…

* hasn’t happened in a loooooong time!

  1. I had Five Star’s album, on vinyl 🙂 As mum’s it does seem to be a guilty thing to just have me-time and treats, but we so need it! So, yes, a little clothes shopping and a cream tea sounds like bliss! x
