Bowling with a toddler

Bowling wth a toddler

It’s relatively hard to keep the attention of a toddler for long enough to get through an episode of Mr Tumble, let alone a half hour bowling game, but somehow we managed it (albeit with a 5-10 minute time-out for obsessive fascination with a drinks machine). Fortunately he didn’t win (let’s face it there is nothing more embarassing than having to admit that you were thrashed hands down at a game of ten pin by a two year old).

Santa arrives!

Santa's arrival on monster truck

Yesterday I took two very excited little boys (well, to be fair, one very excited little boy and a slightly non-plussed toddler) up to our local garden centre to see the arrival of Santa – on a ‘monster truck’ – surely a little boy’s dream?

It wasn’t what I had imagined by the description ‘monster truck’ – I was thinking small vehicle on massive wheels – but it was pretty impressive all the same – a shiny, American style lorry cab, adorned with tinsel and tooting it’s rather impressive whistle as it drove up the road outside to building excitement as the crowds thronged the walkways straining for their first view of the man in red.

Black and White Photography Project: French Windows

French Windows

I took this picture back in July, looking out into my my parents’ courtyard garden. There is something about the picture of a an empty table and chairs and an open door – it suggests an untold story, in fact my dad said it looks like a it could be on the cover of a book when he saw this one. I like that.

Black and White Photography Project: Sibling portrait with scooters

Boys looking down with scooters

Its funny how some of my absolute favourite black and white photographs involve the boys and their scooters and this is no exception! I just think that there is something so beautiful about the way they are mirroring each other’s actions and both looking down – it’s really quite sweet. I like the chequerboard design on the ground behind them too!

Black and White Photography Project: Boy in a Tunnel

Boy in a tunnel

When you’re looking at black and white photography from the eye of a complete photographic novice, you suddenly realise, through experimentation that certain things can be very nicely enhanced. I have found that black and white brings out textures that might otherwise be missed, obviously any photo where there is an easy to spot contrast between light and darkness benefits, and  it also lends itself nicely to a picture like this where there are some interesting shapes.

B&W Photography Project: Miniature Railway

Frimley train ride

A couple of weeks ago we visited Frimley Lodge Park on Sunday because it was one of the days when they were running the miniature railway there. Last time we visited this one EJ was only a couple of weeks old and I didn’t go on at all, but this time he had his first experience of it and loved it!

I have added a ‘halloween’ inspired filter!

The Black and White Photography Project: Gruffalo

Gruffal - silent movie

If you go down to the woods today… etc. I like the way black and white makes this shot look like a still from a silent movie. It was taken last weekend on a little family outing to Alice Holt Forest.

Black and White Photography Project: Camera Grab!

JJ camera grab

Mucking around in the car today I took a few shots of the boys through the backs of the drivers and passenger seats and they thought it would be funny to try and grab at the camera. I like the way their little faces come into sharp focus in the background and they work well in black and white!

Black and White Photography Project: paper birds

B&W paper birds

This is an old one – I took it the last time we visited the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon and I was left to admire all the innovative kid-friendly decorations, book corner, dressing up corner, colouring corner… One ceiling had the bottom of a rocket disappearing into the ceiling as if into space. This was the corridor which had twinkly fairy lights above and lots of little framed doorways down below, which, when opened, revealed various scenes from Alice in Wonderland – one of their productions.
