Black and White Photography Project: Boy in a Tunnel

Boy in a tunnel

When you’re looking at black and white photography from the eye of a complete photographic novice, you suddenly realise, through experimentation that certain things can be very nicely enhanced. I have found that black and white brings out textures that might otherwise be missed, obviously any photo where there is an easy to spot contrast between light and darkness benefits, and  it also lends itself nicely to a picture like this where there are some interesting shapes.

The Black and White Photography Project: Gruffalo

Gruffal - silent movie

If you go down to the woods today… etc. I like the way black and white makes this shot look like a still from a silent movie. It was taken last weekend on a little family outing to Alice Holt Forest.

Linking up to The Black and White Photography Project over at Podcast The Doves.

Black and White Photography Project: paper birds

B&W paper birds

This is an old one – I took it the last time we visited the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon and I was left to admire all the innovative kid-friendly decorations, book corner, dressing up corner, colouring corner… One ceiling had the bottom of a rocket disappearing into the ceiling as if into space. This was the corridor which had twinkly fairy lights above and lots of little framed doorways down below, which, when opened, revealed various scenes from Alice in Wonderland – one of their productions.

View into Anstey’s Cove: B&W Photography Project

JJ Anstey's Cove

While we were away in Devon we discovered this little cove which was walking distance from where we were staying. A couple of memorable things happened whilst we were there including JJ bashing up his knee wading between rocks, EJ covering himself from head to foot in chocolate ice cream and a bit of a stone chucking marathon by EJ who seems to love chucking stuff more than anything else!

I caught this pic of JJ looking out to sea contemplatively and it comes across really quite mean and moody in black and white I think.

The B&W Photography Project: Boy on a scooter

Scooter fun

When I heard about the Black and White Photography Project over at Podcast Dove it prompted me to figure out how to set my camera to take black and white photographs. I was over at my parents’ with the boys and it was a very bright sunny day. The boys have both been given a scooter each for their upcoming birthdays and decided to give them a bit of a whirl in the courtyard garden. I have to admit I got completely carried away with experimentation – before I started outside I had taken about half a dozen ‘studies’ of little aspects of my parents’ home and then, once the boys got going, I followed them around, made it into a game and snapped away as they whizzed about, attempting not to become a victim of a hit and run!
