Word of the Week: Momentum

Momentum

I’m not sure why I got so motivated to get on and do ‘things’ with the blog these last couple of weeks, but I have finally undertaken some stuff that several of my more successful compatriots got on with about 10 months ago!
After going self-hosted a couple of weeks ago I have been adding various useful tools and widgets and then, after what was, really, quite a brief brainstorm, I decided to take the bull by the horns and launch my very own, very first linky, The Truth about… which went live on Tuesday.

It was such a relief to see a few lovely people embrace the idea and link up some fab posts. I’m not sure what’s considered a good haul of links for a newly launched linky but I reckon 11 ain’t bad!
It may have been bad timing though, to launch during half-term week and at a time when there seems to be a bit of a backlash against the increasingly discussed phenomena of ‘linky fatigue’ (I’ve just coined that expression!). The beginning of the big frantic run up to Christmas probably means people will have less time on their hands to focus on increasing or altering their blog schedule but I have to say I would be thrilled if any of you lovely people would consider if any of your posts – old or new, linked to other sites or not – conforms to the criteria of being a no-gloss, heart on sleeve, properly honest look at anything at all. It’s always reassuring to know that other peoples’ lives are not as Instagram-perfect as they might seem and that we don’t all take ourselves *that* seriously!

I finally received my lovely newly minted business cards for the blog on Wednesday just in time for BlogFest next weekend (eek!).

Real business card

Momentum is definitely building now and I’m feeling excited and nervous in equal measure! I’ve got my sessions all booked up, I know what I’m going to wear and the grandparents are all lined up for the munchkins!

Momentum has also been building up with regards to Halloween. On Tuesday I took the boys to Manydown Farm in Hampshire (post to come!) where we picked out pumpkins and enjoyed the glorious weather (which promptly up and vanished on Wednesday!). Today we are off to a Halloween fayre and then later on a ‘Light party’ at a local church in the late afternoon which offers an alternative celebration to the usual trick or treating without the scary monsters!

Happy Halloween and weekend WOTWers!

    • It’s so true – I guess we all go through phases and there are times when we find we are able to fit more in. I was a bit rubbish over the summer – I was either birthday party planning or just out somewhere the whole time I think! It’s nice to get it going again but at the same time I am trying to keep some balance because I’ve been a bit guilty of fobbing the kids off recently and I don’t want to be that mum who has her head buried in a computer or smartphone the whole time! I’d love to see you join in with The Truth about.. too – that would be awesome! 🙂

  1. Well done you, I somehow missed the launch of your linky but spotted it yesterday! Have a post planned ready to link up next week lovely, its a great idea! 🙂 good for you giving your blog a.real.push, I wish I had your motivation! Hope blogfest goes well too, I’m still a bit nervous to attend a blog conference! Happy Halloween too hope you have fun! Xx

    • Thank you Caroline! I wasn’t sure whether to give you the heads up about my linky launch this week because of you having a new-born and all (I didn’t want you to feel under any pressure!) but you have really put some posts out there since Little Miss was born so I guess you are finding pockets of time! 🙂 I think you went through all this self-motivation way back when you went self-hosted, designed your header and started up Creative Challenge linky! It’s not surprising that things have dropped off a bit since! Once you get into the swing of being a mother of two I’m sure you’ll get right back into it. Going to BlogFest is a bit nerve-wracking but at least I know some of the other people going (albeit only ever having met Elfa from Californian Mum in London!). I just really wanted to be able to be proud of my blog by the time it came around! Happy Halloween! Xx

    • Ah, thanks so much Reneé! I’m overwhelmed that people are being so supportive considering the fact that there are so many linkys to choose from out there these days! Exciting news about the book – I love the cover. It looks so professional – I reckon you’ll get it in the shops soon! 🙂 Xx

    • That’s true, there are lots of little costs that all build up when you add them all together… I’m just loving the ability to diversify my content a bit now though – it feels really exciting – like the beginning of a new phase! 🙂 X

    • Thanks Kim! It didn’t set the world on fire or anything (:-) ) but I was really pleased with the support I got and it feels a bit like my baby now! Hope you can join up some time! X

    • Thanks Jocelyn! I take it this means you aren’t going to Blogfest? I’m desperate to pop my conference cherry as it were 🙂 Ooer! Looking forward to reading your Halloween bits and bobs Xx

  2. Sounds like it has been a great week for you – love your new linky and hope to join in again in future weeks. ‘Linky fatigue’ is a great term though – I love the fact that there are so many different linkys out there for different blog posts and just because there are loads doesn’t mean we have to try and join them all each week! Hope you have a great time at BlogFest.

    • This is very true Louise! I wasn’t sure whether to go for something completely niche and thereby restrict the pool of potential linkers or go for something totally all-encompassing – there are already several go-to biggies like that which I didn’t really want to compete with… I went for something a bit middle-groundy instead – I think it’s pretty adaptable – any subject matter goes, the only real proviso is that it should be a real open, honest post, either totally heartfelt of a little bit tongue in cheek! I hope I do see you back – it would be wonderful to have regular linkers! 🙂 Xx

  3. I admire your momentum for all things blogging especially in half term where time to blog is even more precious than usual! And congratulations on your new linky, I’m still relatively new to blogging so I’m not sure if there are too many, for me it’s an opportunity to find new blogs and read about topics from a different perspective – so I say go for it and keep going! Hope you have a lovely week xx

    • That’s true – there are always more and more blogs starting up every day and I guess everyone finds their way to their favourite linkies. 🙂 Thanks for the encouragement X

    • Thank you Sara! I think Linky Fatigue comes in fits and starts doesn’t it? I find myself either joining in too many or not enough (I miss the feeling of community that comes with reading, sharing and commenting). X
